What Merritt learned

01 · TALK TOGETHER

A little help for grown-ups

02 · PRACTICE TOGETHER

For grown-ups A little help for reading together

Read the story aloud and pause when your child wants to talk. Name Merritt’s feeling, notice his choice, and connect it to the trait. Use the conversation help when needed; your child can point, act, or answer in a few words. This is time to connect, not a test.

Try the activity together and notice the effort. Use safe, age-appropriate items and adapt movement, speech, or touch to your child. You can split the story and activity across two little moments.

No catching up. No perfect answers.

The bee is Merritt’s inner voice

The Character Bear comes with a bee inside his heart—a little reminder of the love and goodness within. In these stories, the bee is Merritt’s gentle inner voice: inviting him to pause, open his heart, and choose with love.

This is the spiritual heart of Character Bear: being loved, listening within, offering grace, and letting that love grow through our choices. Families can explore that meaning in their own words.

The bee does not make Merritt perfect or take his choices away. Merritt can feel angry, unsure, or hurt and still find a caring next step—with help when he needs it.

Make it a moment together

  1. Settle in. Sit together. If you have Merritt, invite your child to hold him or notice the bee inside his heart. Any favorite toy—or simply being together—works too.
  2. Read the character story. Notice Merritt’s feelings, the bee’s loving reminder, and the choice Merritt makes. The trait definition and “What Merritt learned” help you connect the story to the lesson.
  3. Talk together. Use the story question and its grown-up help. Listen to your child, then share a small example from your own day.
  4. Carry one little thing into your day. Choose an action together. Later, ask how it felt, without keeping score.

The stories use simple language for a grown-up and young child to explore together. Follow your child’s pace: pause for questions, act out a moment, or read part now and part later. The goal is understanding one trait through a story and enjoying time together.
